BUV Events Management Students Become Finalists in Global Sustainable Tourism Challenge

In a remarkable feat, the Octopus Team from the British University Vietnam (BUV) secured their place in the Final Round of the “Sustainable Innovation in Tourism & Hospitality: 2023 Global Student Challenge.” Comprising three dedicated Events Management students – Kim Chau Anh, Luu Chau Anh, and Pham Bao Van, the Octopus Team emerged as one of the two outstanding representatives from Vietnam in this region-wide competition.
Seeing a major sustainability problem within the wedding industry, the Octopus Team tackled the challenge with a project titled “Waste Not Want Knots: Stakeholder Engagement within the Circular Economy Framework in promoting Wedding Sustainability”. Their innovative solution includes a Wedding Library equipped with a sophisticated sharing system for wedding dresses, backdrops, flowers, and other materials. Additionally, they proposed a Green Wedding Network, aiming to connect various stakeholders within the wedding industry to amplify the impact of their sustainable solution. The team complemented these initiatives with communication campaigns to raise awareness.

Expressing their gratitude, the Octopus Team credited their success to the guidance of Dr. Maren Viol and Mr. Darius Postma – two dedicated lecturers at BUV School of Hospitality and Tourism. They emphasised the significance of the skills acquired during the competition, skills that extend beyond their studies at BUV, highlighting the practical application of the university’s core value – “Sustainability and Responsibility.” This achievement underscores the commitment of BUVers to incorporating these values into their academic pursuits and beyond.
BUV’s emphasis on sustainability is evident in the success of the Octopus Team, showcasing the university’s dedication to fostering a culture of responsibility and innovation, as well as reflecting the institution’s commitment to preparing students for real-world challenges.
As the Octopus Team advanced to the Final Round, their endeavours symbolised the potential for positive change within the global tourism and hospitality sector. The BUV community eagerly anticipates the practical implementation of their initiatives, hopeful that their sustainable solutions will usher in positive changes in the wedding industry and beyond.
About the competition:
The “Sustainable Innovation in Tourism & Hospitality: 2023 Global Student Challenge” is hosted by The International Master’s Program of Tourism and Hospitality (IMTH) at the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT). The competition aims to inspire and cultivate innovative solutions within the tourism and hospitality industry, with a focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience. Open to students worldwide, the competition is conducted in two tracks – Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.
