ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

OVERVIEW

BUV UniPath (English for Academic Purposes – EAP) programme equips students with essential academic English skills before progressing to undergraduate or postgraduate study. Three consecutive courses cover common language skills in academic formats, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, research essays, reports and presentations. Tailored to each discipline, the programme helps students strengthen their English proficiency and adapt to an international learning environment.

Beyond language development, the programme also builds study skills and subject knowledge, providing a strong foundation for students to integrate into the academic community and succeed in their main course of study.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

IELTS Band 4.5 (CEFR B1)

IELTS Band 5.0 (CEFR B1+)

10 weeks · 10 hours per week · 100 hours in total

At the First level of UNIPATH, the curriculum integrates various language, academic and critical thinking skills to provide students with a holistic understanding of their interconnectedness and importance for academic success.

Academic Speaking – Focusing on fluency as well as linguistic and rhetorical features of spoken genres of academic discourse, this part of the course will better prepare students for their future academic endeavors.
Academic Listening – Developing listening comprehension skills in academic context through listening to longer texts and critical engagement with the content.
Academic Reading – Developing reading skills for university study, focusing on inference, evaluation and critical engagement with the content.
Academic Writing – Developing writing skills for academic purposes, focusing on genre specific grammar, vocabulary and text organization.
Academic Skills – Developing study skills and subskills crucial for studying through English as the main medium of instruction.

Access to Canvas Learning Management System for online learning resources

1 placement test at the beginning: Oxford Placement Test (OPT) and interview
Cumulative portfolio–based formative assessment – 70% needs to be submitted.

Group Presentation (20%) (10 Minutes)

Evidence of Independent Study (20%)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Students on a foundation/pathway programme are considered full students of the university. They may take part in extracurricular activities and access student support services, learning resources, and the university's app, just like any other student.

All majors at BUV require completion of a foundation/pathway programme beforehand. The only exception is for students on certain international curricula who meet the partner university's required scores for exemption; such cases are assessed individually by the Academic Affairs team.

Applicants must be aged 17 or above by 31 December of the year of application. Applications that do not meet the minimum age requirement are generally reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with the final admission decision made at the University of London's discretion.

Completion of Grade 12 in Vietnam, or at least 4 separate subjects at GCSE or GCE O-Level with grades A–C, or equivalent.
Academic English proficiency: grade C or above in GCSE/GCE O-Level English, or equivalent, or an IELTS score of 5.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.0 in each component).

The university requires completion of high school (Grade 12), but does not set any minimum grade requirement.

BUV follows the UK education system, so a Vietnamese high school diploma is not mandatory. Applicants must instead demonstrate completion of the equivalent of Grade 12, which can be shown through any of the following BUV-accepted qualifications:

An international high school qualification (IB, A-Level, AP, etc.)
A university foundation programme/certificate (e.g. BUV's International Foundation Programme (IFP) or an equivalent programme)
A certificate confirming completion of secondary education overseas

All special cases require approval from the university's Academic Affairs department and depend on the specific programme and degree-awarding partner, so your child can submit their existing qualifications for the Admissions team to advise on the most suitable pathway.
