BUV UNIPATH (English for Academic Purposes – EAP) programme benefits pre-university (undergraduate and post-graduate) students by teaching a set of vital academic skills – ranging from notetaking when listening to lectures, taking parts in seminar discussions, to developing arguments in writing and critical reading.

The content of BUV’s 3 sequential UNIPATH courses focuses on typical academic learning and teaching methodologies – lectures, seminars, tutorials, research essays, reports, verbal and visual presentations, etc. – and is customised to the requirements of a particular discipline. Simultaneously, students improve their English language proficiency at a steady pace.

The UNIPATH programme represents a holistic approach to English language learning and study skills development. The complete programme equips students with both language proficiency and specifics of a chosen academic disciplinary community. UNIPATH programme comprehensively supports students by fostering their academic skills through English language which is crucial for students’ ultimate academic success.

Course overview At the First level of UNIPATH, the curriculum integrates various language, academic and critical thinking skills to provide students with a holistic understanding of their interconnectedness and importance for academic success. 

Academic Speaking – Focusing on fluency as well as linguistic and rhetorical features of spoken genres of academic discourse, this part of the course will better prepare students for their future academic endeavors. 

Academic Listening – Developing listening comprehension skills in academic context through listening to longer texts and critical engagement with the content. 

Academic Reading – Developing reading skills for university study, focusing on inference, evaluation and critical engagement with the content. 

Academic Writing – Developing writing skills for academic purposes, focusing on genre specific grammar, vocabulary and text organization. 

Academic Skills – Developing study skills and subskills crucial for studying through English as the main medium of instruction.

Course overview At the level of UNIPATH 2, the curriculum integrates various language, academic and critical thinking skills to provide students with a comprehensive skillset required for their future academic success. 

Academic Speaking At this level speaking, as part of the course, goes beyond linguistic and rhetorical features of spoken genres of academic discourse and more into their practice (e.g. presentations, group discussions, debates). 

Academic Listening At this level a significant emphasis is put on developing listening comprehension skills for academic purposes through listening to academic specific texts (e.g. lectures, presentations, discussions) and critical engagement with the content. 

Academic Reading This part of the course focuses on further and more in-depth development of reading skills for university study, focusing on a wider range of genres, critical evaluation and engagement with the content. 

Academic Writing At this level, writing skills for academic purposes include such academic skills as summarizing, synthesizing, argument support and development. 

Academic skills – Further development of study and critical thinking skills and subskills essential for studying through English as the main medium of instruction.

Academic Speaking – At this level, the focus is placed on extensive practice of spoken genres of academic discourse (e.g. presentations, seminar discussions, debates). 

Academic Listening – At this level a significant emphasis is placed on developing listening comprehension skills for academic purposes through listening to academic specific texts (e.g. lectures, presentations, discussions) as well as important subskills such as note taking and summarizing.  

Academic Reading – This part of the course focuses on in-depth development of reading skills for university study, focusing on a wider range of genres, on critical evaluation and engagement with the content, on inferring of meaning from the context, summarizing and synthesizing information. 

Academic Writing – At this level the development of writing skills for academic purposes includes such written academic genres as essays and reports, referencing and citation.
