The passing of BUV Chancellor and Chair of the University Council, Sir Graeme Davies  10:14:00

It is with great sadness that BUV announces its Chancellor and Chair of the University Council, Sir Graeme Davies, passed away on 30 August 2022 at the age of 85. Sir Graeme was instrumental in the founding of BUV, he was its Chairman and President from 2009 until 2018. In 2018 he moved to the position of Chancellor and Chairman of the University Council.

Sir Graeme Davies

Sir Graeme impacted higher education throughout the world, especially in the United Kingdom. He served as the University of London’s Vice-Chancellor between 2003 and 2010 – the longest term of its modern-day VCs. He also served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow from 1995 to 2003 and the University of Liverpool from 1986 to 1991. In between these periods, he was the Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, from 1991 to 1995. Before joining the University of Liverpool, he was Professor of Metallurgy at the University of Sheffield from 1977 to 1986. He had previously worked for 16 years in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science at Cambridge University and was a Fellow of St. Catharine’s College there.

Originally hailing from New Zealand, Sir Graeme received a Bachelor of Engineering in Aeronautical Engineering and a PhD in Materials Science from the University of Auckland. He also taught at the University of Auckland from 1964 to 1966. He held honorary doctorates from thirteen universities and held numerous public office positions in the UK. He was knighted for services to higher education in the 1996 New Year Honours.

Please join us in a moment of silence in memory of Sir Graeme, who has been one of BUV’s strongest supporters, an inspirational Chancellor, Founding President and a dear friend to our staff, faculty, and students. To honour his legacy, his family will set up a BUV Scholarship in Sir Graeme’s name.
